I know how some photographers are always looking to push the boundaries of there work which is a challenge in it's own right. But for me and this editorial I decided to stay with in my own boundaries and stick to my style. Which you will see below is location with natural light. Natural light with a splash of sunshine for this shoot I may add.
I always work by the "One Sun Rule" even if I am shooting in the studio or at least I try to. But that depends on the brief and what the job is for of course. But back to this editorial with the amazing Alexxia from the US of A ......a lot of planning went into this editorial as I wanted to create a fresh but poetic feel to this shoot. With Robyn Phillip on the styling and Alex Grbas on make-up and hair duties, the getting ready part was a breeze so to speak. The following images are what we created for LaMode magazine, a set of beautiful shots that not only reflect the vision we where aiming for but also a engaging shoot that will make you look twice.

Beauty is Only Around the Corner
Beauty is never far away when you live in such amazing country as I do. Even though I am from New Zealand, I know when and how to appreciate beauty in all forms not only in the swim and fashion shoots I do but also in the land and seascapes around me.
That is why I have chosen the Bondi to Bronte walk for my culture editorial. Believe it or not this was the first time I did this walk and I can now see why so many people do it. The saying is "It never gets old" !!! and when you check out the pic's you will see why.
The shape of the rocks that have been beaten down from the wind over the years is nothin short of unreal. Not to mention adding in the coastal lines and you have a sight that is more beautiful than the eye can see.
On a sunny day you will be able to see everything the Bondi to Bronte walk has to offer. And if you are really feeling energetic you can keep walking on to Clovelly. But we can keep that for another time.

I think every city that you live in or have visited has it's hidden treasures in some shape or form. For Sydney my current home town, the city is ever growing by the year. Which leads me on to my latest treasure that I found. And that is "The Barangaroo" site and what a architecture site it is too. From a distance it looks like something that has landed from outer space and rather than being man made. But up close you will see how much work has gone into designing and building it.
This editorial was about creating a set of pictures that reflected not only how "I" saw Barangaroo, but also how I think it was suppose to be built and seen. Which again is the reason why I have shot this in black&white with a splash of colour.
Winter here in Australia is cold but not as cold as the Northern Hemisphere. At least it doesn't snow in Sydney CBD which is a good thing.

Walk With Me
Being fashion forward is never easy anywhere you go in the world. But I would always like to think that Australia has some of the best fashion there is to offer. Even though I am from New Zealand, Sydney is home to me and always will be or at least for now.
So when I got the opportunity to shoot this editorial with Nicola Finetti, I jumped at the chance to work with his clothes. Add one of my favourite models to date and you have something pretty special. Nicola's clothes have so much character and form.
Cinematic would be the best word to describe this editorial with Valentina. Not only did she move gracefully from shot to shot, her presents on set was second to none. Fun fact .....I first worked with Valentina two and half years ago. In that time this was the 8th time I have worked with her. I haven't worked with a model more times than her, enough said.

I always get compliments about my work when ever someone see's my work for the first time. To me that is not only a refreshing thought that I am shooting something that people like, but also makes all these's editorials worth while. Not that I love shooting for laMode.
People who don't work in this industry don't know how much work goes into a shoot like this. I will let you into a secret ......a hell of a lot if you are styling it yourself and not to mention coming up with the concept as well. Not that I mind doing both as I have full control over what I shoot, how I shoot it and what clothes I can pull for the story. And I say story as every photographer likes to think or should I say would love to think there work is narrative. That leads me to how the clothes play a big part in the story. A dress is not a dress till someone wears it, just like a photograph is not a photograph till someone see's it. And trust me a lot of work goes into one photograph ......as the photographer you are thinking about the lighting the composition, and as the stylist you are prepping for what colours are going to work well with the location or how the clothes are going to gel to tell a story.
So you can imagine how much work I have put in to this shoot!!!
On a side note, I haven't shot to much fashion over the last year or so as I have been focusing more on swimwear and life style. So if you do like this shoot and would like to see more, stay tuned as I will be shooting more fashion in the next few weeks.

I am never one to give away my inspiration behind my shoots for LaMode magazine but on this occasion I am happy and safe to say it is the amazing Bruce Weber who inspired this shoot. I always and hardly ever shoot in black and white when I lens swimwear editorials for LaMode but I thought since this is the last swim editorial for a while I thought I would go in a different direction for this shoot.
I use to read a lot of print magazines before the internet took over, but now a days I leave that to the pages that I have liked on my Facebook to see what is happening in the world of print. You see the longer you shoot the more you find that you will find inspo somewhere else other than another photographers work. It is a really good way of learning, but if you really want to develop your own style. Get out there and take photo's and sure enough your style will grow and if you shoot long enough it will change as time progresses.
Just on a side note some of this editorial was shot in colour and then flipped to black and white. And yes like myself, I am sure every photographer uses photoshop to a degree .....some more than others.

What I have always envison for LaMode magazine is it to be a globe brand that won't necessary work in with everyone's season so in this case I have shot another swim editorial for LaMode and will most likely shot another one while the weather is as good as it is in Sydney, Australia.
I always feel very blessed to be able to shoot the models that I do. And that is no exception with Marina from Germany, I can sum her up with one word and that is "AMAZING" I know I have used that word so many times on set when I shoot but when a model makes your life so much easier than what it is. It only means that you are going to create something special, and I would like to think I have done so with this editorial. Not that the last editorial with Courtney wasn't a amazing shoot or any other shoot that I have done for LaMode.
After this editorial you will see on the flip side what some of the colour shots look like in Black and White. That in it's self is a bit of a warm up for what is to come for my next editorial.

Come Play With MyMonochrome
Photographic, black and white essay by Geoffrey Chuah
Black and White photography is not only more pure than colour but it has more meaning to the photographs. Not only will it not steal your soul when you gaze into the pictures. But I would like to think it gives it a more sculptured look to the set of pictures that I have shot here, which by the way are some of the same shots from the above editorial. Love or hate black and white photography you can't escape the fact that it will always hold a place inside the creative side of me to always fall back to.
I was hoping for the water to be a little less choppier when I shot this striking editorial of Courtney. But you can never rely on the mother nature to deliver all your requests in one day "can we now" ?? You usually have to work with what weather conditions you get and in this case it was nice and sunny, and did I say warm as well near prefect conditions for a swim shoot. Gaining inspiration for "Take Me To The Edge" didn't come easy as this has to be my umpteeth swim shoot. Now a days I try and draw inspo from the models that I am shooting, rather than the location and or the swimwear. But I always find it fun capturing and I say capture because when you are shooting with the waves coming in and caressing the models body. It makes it for a some what fun shot to create .......don't get me wrong I love shooting at the beach and I do find it challenging to put together a editorial that is not only eye catching, but will hold you the "reader" long enough to make you want to look at it again and again. That is not easy but that is what every photographer wants to do when he or she picks up there camera and creates.
